• ENSP Fact Sheets on Belgium, Italy and Romania

ENSP launched three new Fact Sheets covering another three European countries: Belgium, Italy and Romania.

According to the 2017 Eurobarometer report from the European Commission, the proportion of daily smokers came down from 23% in 2014 to 17% in 2017, so that the smoking rate among adults and adolescents in Belgium is now lower than the EU average. Belgium has a good level of existing indoor smoking ban implementation, as exposure to SHS inside drinking establishments such as bars is only reported by 18%.

According to the latest Eurobarometer report of 2017 from the European Commission less than a quarter of smokers from Romania have tried to quit (35%). Since Romania introduced its ban on smoking in public establishments in 2016, there have been signicant decreases in the proportion of respondents reporting that they encountered smoking in bars or restaurants.

Every year, more than 36600 of its people are killed by tobacco-caused disease in Romania. Still, more than 28000 children (10-14 y. o.) and 3904000 adults (15+ y. o.) continue to use tobacco each day.
