ENSP, the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and European Federation of Allergy and Airways Diseases Patients’ Associations (EFA) urge Members of European Parliament to follow the recommendations of the Committee on International Trade and give their consent to the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products to the World Health Organisation Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
In the EU, tobacco continues to be the most significant cause of premature deaths responsible for nearly 700,000 deaths every year. Illicit Trade by undermining prices and tax measures makes tobacco products more affordable and helps expand tobacco sales. Moreover, illicit Trade constitutes a substantial loss of tax revenue for governments.
