ENSP Conference on Tobacco Control: Research, Prevention and Treatment

Brussels, 7 April 2016

ENSP Conference on Tobacco Control: Research, Prevention and Treatment brought to Brussels, over 200 experts, researchers, academics and advocates from across Europe but also the US, Canada and Japan, on Tuesday 5th April, for a three-day event.

Despite major travel issues, with the main Airport still closed to the public, delegates and presenters had to make alternative arrangement to get to the European Capital and attend the conference.  Keynote presentations, parallel sessions and lively discussions gave participants in-depth information on a wide number of issues related to tobacco, with a particular focus on scientific research. Delegates were also invited to the European Parliament for a special session hosted by MEP Gilles Pargneaux, who gave a highly motivating welcome speech in English and gave the floor to University professors for the presentations of five major European research projects: EQUIPT, TackSHS, SILNE-R, TOB-G and EUREST PLUS.

The second day, focused on smoking cessation, gave delegates practical details on how to set up their clinics and how to support smokers, including through motivation counseling, medications and carbon monoxide measurements.

“ENSP conference is a premier tobacco control event at European level, with great interest from everyone who worked in the field,” says Cornel Radu-Loghin, ENSP Secretary General. “The fact that we hardly had any cancellations and the fact that speakers, as well as delegates, changed their travels, some to Paris others to Amsterdam, and then took the train Brussels, shows how dedicated and eager they were to attend our event. This is also a strong testament to the work we, as a community, are doing together. On behalf of ENSP, I would like to thank everyone who contributed to making the conference such a great success and I look forward to the positive impact this will make our world moving forward.”
