ERS/ENSP Joint Statement on Plain Packaging

ENSP and the European Respiratory Society (ERS) jointly support plan packaging and strongly urge all European Union Member States (EU MS) to introduce plain packaging legislation within the context of WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) ratification for the protection of European public health. ENSP and ERS has adopted a joint statement on Plain Packaging adressing the following issues:

  • There is clear scientific evidence that plain packaging has a positive impact on public health.
  • The FCTC and the EU Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) provide a legal framework for plain packaging
  • We encourage all Member States to introduce plain packaging
  • We encourage Member States to evaluate the results of the implementation of plain packaging in their population.
