More than 30 countries and scientific organisations, representing a combined population of approximately 1.5 billion people, are joining the most ambitious global initiative to position the dental practice as a key ally in tackling tobacco and other nicotine products
Promoting global efforts for smoking cessation and the prevention of tobacco use and emerging forms of nicotine consumption through the dental practice is the ambitious objective of the initiative ‘Working Together to Stop Tobacco and Nicotine’. This is the first activity arising from the global ‘Working Together’ initiative, a project of significant scientific, educational and strategic value made possible through a philanthropic donation from Professor Paul Levi Jr. and his wife Patricia Levi, promoted by the SEPA Foundation in cooperation with the Levi-Richman Integration Initiative of the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation. This effort aims to place oral health professionals at the forefront of the fight against the main modifiable risk factors associated with periodontitis, particularly tobacco use and diabetes.
The initial focus is on tobacco and new forms of nicotine consumption. The first action will be a multi-session online event on Thursday, June 4, with a truly international character and global reach, involving more than sixty speakers and over thirty scientific organisations and countries under the leadership of the SEPA Foundation and the European Network for Smoking and Tobacco Prevention (ENSP).
Experts, institutions and scientific societies from the Americas, Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia have confirmed their participation. Countries directly involved through national breakout sessions include Germany, Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, Norway, Switzerland, Türkiye and Ukraine; Argentina, the United States, Mexico, Peru, Portugal, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela; Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Morocco, Taiwan and Australia, as well as the Ibero-Pan-American Federation of
Periodontology (FIPP) and the Continental European Division of the International Association for Dental Research (CED-IADR).
Prior to this presentation, to explain the objectives of this campaign and the structure of this first global initiative, as well as to highlight key aspects of tobacco use and oral health and the essential role that dental practices can play in this context, an international online press conference has been organised. It will take place on Tuesday, June 2, at 2:00 p.m. (CEST, Central European Summer Time), 8 a.m (USA ET Eastern Time), 7 a.m. (USA CT Central Time).
