    20 years of Polish Tobacco Control

    Commemorating the 20th anniversary of the implementation of the Polish Tobacco Control Bill, Health Promotion Foundation has now published a series of articles documenting the developments in tobacco control in Poland and Central and Eastern Europe. In the 1980s Poland was the country with the highest cigarette consumption in the world and the highest smoking prevalence in Europe. Following the Tobacco Control Bill implemented in 1996, a series of measures were introduced including large health warnings on cigarette packs and a complete ban on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship.     ENSP Sessions at ECToH 2017

    The European Conference on Tobacco or Health (ECTOH) Porto, Portugal – 23-25 March 2017 was a valuable gathering for everyone who works in tobacco control in Europe as well as abroad and a provided a great networking opportunity among participants.     Chronic respiratory diseases account for more than 315,000 Europeans dying every year. Diseases such as respiratory allergy, asthma and COPD cost more than €300 billion to Europe’s economy annually. How can we act to reduce the burden of these diseases on both patients and Europe’s health and long-term care systems? 24 January 2017 was the final day for MEPs to voice their support for further action on chronic respiratory diseases through the Written Declaration 115/2016.     Romania: Unprecedented level of support for tobacco use reduction policies

    The Aer Pur Association, Romania, (ENSP Member) conducts several advocacy, advertising and communication actions aiming to reach the objectives of the national campaign “2035 – The First Generation without Tobacco”. The “2035 without Tobacco” campaign is a national strategy that seeks to reduce tobacco consumption in Romania. Through this campaign, the scope is to generate public policies that regulate how manufacturers of tobacco products advertise their products at points of sale, through promotions and sponsorships, so that children will no longer be exposed to the message.     COP7 Decisions

    The COP or the Conference of the Parties to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control is the governing body of the WHO FCTC comprised of all Parties to the Convention. The COP keeps the implementation of the Convention under regular review and takes the necessary decisions  to promote its effective implementation. The COP may also adopt protocols, annexes and amendments to the Convention. The work of the COP is governed by its Rules of Procedure.     Marketing of hybrid tobacco products

    With the rise in production and marketing of hybrid tobacco products, such as the heated-not-burned products, ENSP would like to highlight the legislative issues and health risks related to these new tobacco products. Heated-not-burned products, like the IQOS, which has been launched by Phillip Morris International in Japan, Italy, Switzerland most recently in the UK, consist of small tobacco sticks, which are heated instead of burned. There is still insufficient scientific evidence as to the health risks of using these products, which is why ENSP recommends a cautious approach.     Introduction Tobacco products are unique: they cause chronic diseases for their active and passive consumers (cancer, cardio-vascular and respiratory diseases); they prematurely kill one in two loyal consumers (700 000 annual deaths in the European Union(1), 480 000 in the United States(2)); the cost of tobaccorelated diseases weighs considerably more than the tax revenues from tobacco products (in France, the annual tobacco tax revenues are 11 billion euros, tobacco-related health expenditure is 26 billion euros(3); productivity losses related to tobacco are far from negligible.
